Core nations: the core nations are dominant in the world system, today, the us, canada, australia, the scandinavian countries, britain, france, germany, italy, Japan are considered to be among the wealthiest and most powerful nations. India, china, and perhaps indonesia have recently joined this group. Semi-peripheral nations have less power, information, wealth, and influence than core nations, but more than peripheral nations. Today n. africa, spain, portugal, south africa, middle eastern countries, russia, mexico, countries in central & south america. Peripheral nations are: the least economically powerful: today indonesia, most of the african continent, the pacific north of australia including papua new. Within the us local newspapers express and create local and national identity with stories about both. Social arenas- everyone sees the same things in the papers. National identity is expressed through the national insert parade magazine adapted to each. The some of the cartoons are identical, creating a shared national experience.
