NSG 4415 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Organizational Communication, Reward System, Reinforcement
Document Summary
Motivation may be identi ed as the force within the individual that in uences or directs behavior. Because motivation comes from within a person, managers cannot directly motivate subordinates. The humanistic manager can, however, create and environment that maximizes the development of human potential. Intrinsic = internal drive to do or be something. Extrinsic = motivation enhanced by the job environment or external rewards. Motivators = achievements, recognition, work, responsibility, advancement, and possibility for growth. Hygiene = salary, supervision, job security, positive working condition, personal life, interpersonal relationships and peer, company policy, and status. Maslow suggested that people are motivated to satisfy certain needs, ranging from basic survival to complex psychological needs, and that people seek a higher need only when the lower needs have been predominantly met. Prioritize and enjoy the journey, not just the destination. While inherently unconventional, do not seek to shock or disturb. Are motivated by growth, not by the satisfaction of needs.
