Ventilation = occurs as air moves into and out of the respiratory system through the process of inspiration and expiration. Respiration = oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged at the level of the alveoli. Perfusion = movement of oxygenated blood into the tissues. Speech = movement of air through the coal cords allowing civilization of words. Sense of smell = movement of air through the nose allowing sense of smell. Fluid balance = water excreted as water vapor through the exhalation process. Upper = nose, mouth, sinuses, pharynx (throat), and lynx. Turbinates lter the air and foreign matter is ltered out though the cilia > humidifying and warming the air. Sinuses are empty lled cavities that humidify and warm inspired air, absorb shock pervading protection from facial trauma, provide voice resonance, and decrease weight of the skull. Epiglottis is a tight seal over the larynx when an individual is swallowing food or liquids to prevent aspiration.
