Identity and self esteem are dependent on physical appearance. 90% of women and 35% of men diet at some point in their life. Characteristics - extreme perfectionism, weight fear, signi cant weight loss, body image disturbances, strenuous exercising, and peculiar food handling patterns. Physical affects - reduced hr, bp, metabolic rate, and production of estrogen and testosterone. Often stop having a cycle due to absence of nutrients. Not able to pinpoint speci c genetic component, but 5-10% of mothers that have anorexia nervosa pass it on to their children. Bulimia rigidity and over control cyclic behavioral pattern develop rigid rules obsessive rituals overly strict dieting or fasting periods of binge eating and purging very thin and unhealthy looking normal weight, or a little overweight. Begins with sporadically skipping meals and strict diets or fasting. Moves onto binge eating, which is when person ingests huge amounts of food within a short time until uncomfortably full.
