Not attributable to mental disorders that have an organic basis, such as dementia. Amnesia - loss of or failure of memory caused by problems in the functioning of the memory areas of the brain. Can result from concussions, traumatic brain injury, alcoholism or disorders of aging brain. Retrograde - loss of memory for events that occurred prior to the onset of the problem. Anterograde - loss of memory for events that occurred after the onset of the problem. Dissociative amnesia - one or more episodes of memory loss of important personal information. Suddenly become aware that they have a total loss of memory for events that occurred during a period that may range from a few hours to a whole lifetime.
