Increase in frequency, volume, and uid content of stool. Water is increased by malabsorption or water secretion in the bowel. Two or fewer bowel movements per week or dif cult passage of stool. Rock hard or putty like mass of feces in rectum. Watery mucus or liquid stool can be passed around the impaction. Bulk forming agents - bran, fibercon, metamucil, citrucel. Osmotic and saline laxatives - lactulose, sorbitol, moml magnesium citrate. Irritant or stimulant laxatives - dulcolax, cascara, senna, castor, oil. High ber - raw veggies and fruit, cereal bran. Fluids - 6 to 8 glasses per day. Characterized by abdominal pain and alterations in bowel patterns. Altered mobility and an altered response to stress. May be due to enteric nervous system and autonomic nervous system. Anemia, fever, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, severe constipation, weight loss. Pt. do better with therapy if they have: trusting relationship, coping mechanisms, and less severe/frequent symptoms.
