Cholelithiasis - formation of stones (calculi) within the gallbladder or bile duct system. 80% of gallstones are made up of cholesterol, the rest are made of calcium or mixture of bile components. Serum bilirubin > elevated bilirubin may indicates obstructive bile ow in biliary duct. Bilirubin formed from hug to for broken down rbcs. Serum amylase and lipase - to rule out problems with pancreas. Qeustran - helps with itching if there is high concentration of bile salts on the skin. Binds with bile salts to help with excretion through feces. Dietary management - npo dietary oral intake may be eliminated with laparoscopic cholescystecotmy. Others - lithotripsy used to crush stones via shock waves. Complementary - goldenseal herbal treatment used in cholecystitis. should not be used in pregnancy or nursing others. Rare - affects more men, usually over age 65. Advanced usually by the time it is found.
