Liver = one of the most active organs in the body. Gall bladder: pear shaped muscular sac that sits just beneath the liver. Gall bladder contracts when food enters the intestine so that bile may never the duodenum via the common bile duct to help with digestion. Secretes digestive enzymes through the pancreatic duct, unites with the common bile duct, and empties into the duodenum. Jaundice occurs if a high amount of bilirubin build up in the blood. Cholestasis = decrease in bile ow in the liver. In ammation of the liver caused by a group of viruses. Absorbed by the intestine and spreads to liver. Usually transmitted by drinking contaminated milk or water or eating shell sh from contaminated areas. Children < 5 years old usually asymptomatic, so spread is common among preschools and daycares or institutions housing large numbers of people. S/s include malaise, fever, n/v, abdominal pain, dark urine, and jaundice - u like symptoms.
