Components of the sensory experience: sensory reception - achieved through the 5 senses visual auditory olfactory tactile gustatory - taste sensory perception - organization and translation of data or stimuli into meaningful info. Four aspects of the sensory process: stimulus - agent or act that stimulates a nerve receptor receptor - nerve cell acts a receptor by converting the stimulus to a nerve impulse. Arousal mechanism: controlled by the reticular activating system sensoristasis - describes state in which person is in optimal arousal awareness - ability to perceive internal and external stimuli, and respond appropriately. State: full consciousness disoriented confused somnolent semicomatose coma. Sensory alterations: sensory deprivation - decrease or lack of meaningful stimuli. Decreased attention span, dif culty concentrating, decreased problem solving. Sensory de cit - impaired reception, perception, or both, of one or more of the senses. Lifestyle and personality - in uences the quality and quantity of stimulation to which an individual is accustomed.
