The tragedy of the greeks was that they failed to solve the dilemma of political con ict. In the end, they were undone from within as they fought amongst themselves from 431. They were simultaneously rescued and transformed by one of the most remarkable. In 338 bc, alexander"s father, phillip of macedone, a tribal leader from the rocky wilderness north of greece, overcame the greeks by defeating a numerically superior. Phillip, though, was killed two years later in a family dispute and his handsome and energetic son alexander succeeded at the age of 20. Alexander swiftly consolidated power and put to death all potential rivals. He was so successful and secure that he left a deputy in charge of greece and led an army of 48,000 into asia. By 331 bc, alexander had conquered the entire persian empire. During this campaign, alexander"s troops performed some of the most stunning feats in the annals of military history.
