Document Summary

Nervous system: an extensive network of specialized cells that carry information to and from all parts of the body. Neuroscience: structure and function of neurons, nerves, and nervous tissue; relationship to behavior and learning. Neuron: basic cell, many types, sends and receives signals that affect many aspects of behavior and motor control. Dendrites: sends and receives messages from other neurons, extend from soma. Axon: terminal buttons (branches and ends in tips), neurotransmitters stored in vesicles, single fiber emerging from soma. Myelin: speed up neural impulses, fatty coating of glial cells, clean up waste and dead neurons. Glial cells: provide support for neurons to grow on and around, oligodendrocytes, Relative charge inside cell negative, positive outside due to diffusion. Cell membrane semipermeable, some substances enter through tiny protein channels. Electrochemical impulse, admits sodium, depolarization, cell + inside, - outside. Na close, k channel open and exits cell carrying + charge and returning membrane to original condition.
