Articles of confederation: effective at governing the colonies during the war but not long term, produced the northwest ordinance. Republic: any form of elected government, frequently, but not always democratic, non-democratic republics include ancient rome and the ussr. Direct democracy: people vote on issues directly, only really practical in small governments, such as town-meetings. Representative democracy: people elect representatives who vote for their interests, most common form of democracy in the world. Oligarchy: rule by the aristocracy, the wealthy, a small group of people with all of the power, ancient rome and arguably early america. Virginia plan: written by james madison, bicameral legislation (upper and lower house, number of lower house representatives chosen by population of state, upper house representatives chosen by the lower house. New jersey plan: written by william patterson, unicameral legislature (one house, each state gets exactly one vote, meant to give small states more of a say in government and keep their rights from being ignored.
