Bill of rights: 1st 10 amendments mainly. 13th abolished slavery, 14th gave citizenship, 15th gave all men the right to vote, Article 1 sect 8: congress shall have the power to form a uniform rule of naturalization. Jus sanguinis or jus soli (wong kim arc case of march 28, 1898) Dredd scott decision(1857) stated freed slaves were not citizens but later over tuned. Since about 1958 supreme court decided citizenship is a fundamental right that cannot be taken away. Welfare cannot be denied from people from other states. Equality is spoken about frequently in the const. but us has not always kept this. Did not welcome jews during holocaust; slavery, treatment of native americans; Minorities & women have struggled for equal rights for decades. 14th amendment: prohibits unfair classifications of people. Plessy v ferguson(1895) ; in 1954 brown v board decision overturned. Susan b anthony & elizabeth stanton arrested for fighting for gender rights.
