The problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line (how race has become infused in federal policy) The problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line web. Legacy of slavery set in motion many issues. Individual prejudice : individual one against the other; i don"t like you. Institutional racism : discrimination with the power of law behind it institutions discriminating against people of certain races. Housing and highway programs: opportunities (economic), reshaped cities: some was intentional, some unintentional consequences (ex. race) Factors: southern italians, blacks, mexicans , housing in decline, person seems unstable (low salary, keep getting different jobs, how many loans are outstanding, considered undesirable risks , insidiousness of race (cause and correlation certain policy put together inherently racist) 1945-1964 job opportunities (industrial: escape jim crow, agriculture was being mechanized (less jobs, ww2 = war against fascism, for freedom, blacks who fought in war to liberate others in other countries.
