Occurs 3 to 4 times per night. Affects overall level of functioning: reticular activating system, stages of sleep. Patients with chronic illness: more difficulty sleeping, interruption of hospitalizations, illness interrupts, sleep disorders. Sleeping infants: safety is number one priority, keep stuffed toys, pillows, and loose blankets out of the crib, make sure that the mattress covers are tight. 2: place the infant on his or her back to sleep. Sleeping adolescents: sleep latency drops to about 20% in puberty. Factors that affect sleep: need, environment, relationships, shift work, nutrition.
