KINS 1223 Lecture 4: Anatomy Unit 4
Document Summary
Muscle primarily responsible for causing movement: antagonist. Opposes particular movement of agonist: synergist. Ex: where biceps brachii is agonist, the synergist is the brachialis or brachioradialis: ex: where the movement is hip flexion, the agonist is the iliopsoas, and the antagonist is the gluteus maximus. Where the movement is hip extension, the gluteus maximus is the agonist and the iliopsoas is the antagonist. Levers (simple machines: moving body= system of levers, bones, joints and muscles constitute lever system, use to gain advantage in force, speed or range, creates mechanical advantage so that work may be done. Components of a lever system: e= effort force (muscle, r = resistance force (gravity or load, f = fulcrum (joint, moment arm: distance between force and fulcrum. Torque: torque= force x moment arm distance, can be tresistance or teffort. If resistance is greater than effort, you get no movement. Resistance torque: resistance torque= resistance force x moment arm resistance.
