Sibling identification - when siblings are trying to look different from one another. As children mature from childhood to early adolescence sibling conflict increases. Over the course of adolescence sibling relationships become: Quality of sibling relationships are affected quality of parent-child relationship. Quality of adolescent-sibling relationship affects adolescents relationships with peers. To what extent a given trait is genetically vs. environmentally determined. Environments can determine whether these tendencies are actualized. Trying to distinguish self from sibling can also diminish feelings of competition. Dramatic increase in the divorce rate 1960-80. More or less leveled off since then. Over 30% of today"s teenagers will experience their parents" divorce. Over of all first marriages will likely end in divorce or separation. About 16% of all children in the us grow up in abject poverty. Large gap between the very poor and very wealthy.
