CSCD 2209 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Homorganic Consonant, Affricate Consonant, Vocal Folds
Document Summary
Chapter 1: phonetics: a sound science, phonetics: the study of the production and perception of speech sounds, historical phonetics: the study of sound changes in words. The increased muscular energy will cause the syllable to stand apart from the others due to greater emphasis on the syllable. Chapter 3: anatomy and physiology of the speech mechanism: the respiratory system and respiration, the process of speech production begins with the lungs. The diaphragm is a major muscle that separates the abdominal cavity from the thoracic cavity. As the diaphragm lowers, the rib cage expands, enlarging the thoracic cavity and creating extra space for the inflating lungs. These actions are accomplished by several sets of muscles, most notably the external intercostal muscles, located between the ribs. As the lungs expand, the air pressure in the lungs becomes less than the air pressure in the environment.
