Document Summary

Survey research - popular measurement tool in research. Guidelines - asking questions; important to think about how questions are asked. Ex. policing study - how busy officers were during shift (variable) Measured on scale of 1-10 (not busy - very busy) Bad measure - the officers can lie so their boss wouldn"t find out if they weren"t being productive. Change question - how many calls responded to. Scale of 1-10 (no calls - too many to keep track of) Easier for officers to tell the truth without seeming lazy - not officers fault if they received no calls. Avoid double-barreled questions: ask two things at once. Ex. people that do drugs are criminals; someone may not care about weed, but highly disprove of heroin. Make items short and to the point. Avoid negative items: designed to trick people/make them think. People have opinions associated with different people/organizations. Ex. asking about trump will have answers influenced by political affiliation.
