Flexibility - not much to prepare in advance. More appropriate way to measure behavior rather than surveys. Generalizability - personal nature of type of research may produce findings that can"t be replicated elsewhere. Gain access to people being observed = sponsor to vouch for you, Ex. formal organization - police; subculture - drug dealers say you"re legit. Qualitative interview: variables may require interviews from subjects being observed. May be difficult depending on circumstance: subjects commitment to giving thorough, honest answers. Break protective barrier - make interview more lighthearted, transparent, and personal. Format: casual conversation; tricking individual to give information desired. Complete participant: researcher participates in act being observed. Subjects observed do not know the research is being conducted. Monitor ivs: amount of people, drinks offered, entertainment, how drunk people are. Conducted in many bars to prove what variables lead to more altercations.
