Aristotle - scale of nature - things range from primitive to advanced (hierarchy) Transformism - things change over time but not evolution. Various religions incorporated belief of creation, dominate theory before darwin. Linnaeus - used creation and scale of nature to make hierarchical classification for naming species. French naturalists - buffon, cuvier, lamarck (1700s) Species are real - differentiation between species. Cooling rate of iron is so slow and there is cool iron so the earth is very thousands of years old. Believed in creation but discovered that organisms went extinct.
