Document Summary

Sends messages very quickly from cell to cell by electrical and chemical means. Three basic steps: receives info from sense organs and nerve endings and transmits messages to. Cns: cns processes the info and determines what response is appropriate, cns issues commands to muscles and gland cells to carry out response. Nerve- bundle of nerve fibers (axons) wrapped in fibrous connective tissue. Ganglion- knot like swelling in a nerve where the cell bodies of neurons are concentrated. Somatic sensory division carries signals from receptors in skin, muscles, bones and joints. Visceral sensory division carries signals from viscera of thoracic and abdominal cavities: motor (efferent) division. Carries signals from cns to gland and muscle cells (effectors) that carry out response. Somatic motor division carries signals to skeletal muscles (somatic reflexes) Visceral motor division (autonomic nervous system) carries signals to glands, cardiac and smooth muscle; involuntary. Sympathetic division arouses body for action but inhibits digestion. Parasympathetic division calms body but stimulates digestion.
