The Yalta Conference
• Meeting of the big three allied leaders
• Deciding what the future plans for the post war are
• Churchill saw Stalin as a fundamentally bad guy
• Roosevelt just wanted to level with Stalin in order to win him over
• Roosevelt was not in good health, had heart disease
April 12th, 1945
FDR dies, Harry S. Truman sworn in as President
Potsdam conference
• In a parliamentary system, the people vote for representatives who will vote for the leader
• The party in power will choose the leader
• Atley Truman and Stalin talk about post war plans
• Truman mentions his "Manhattan project" and tells Stalin about the "new weapon"
• Invasion of Japan
o Expected to take 1 million US casualties to take Japan
• Included killed, captured, or missing
Atomic Bombing of Japan
Hiroshima: August 6th,1945
o Dropped by the Enola Gay plane
o Asks Japan to surrender, they refuse
Nagasaki: August 9th, 1945
o Dropped by the Bockscar plane
Casualty estimate is around 100,000 per bomb
V-J Day
August 15, 1945: Japans surrender announced
September 2, 1945: Japan officially signs surrender aboard USS Missouri
