Listening: The process of receiving, Constructing meaning from, and responding to spoken and/or
nonverbal messages
Modes of communication:
Writing 9%
Reading 16%
Talking 35%
Listening 40%
3 step process of listening;
1. Receiving - listener tunes in to the speakers message
2. Constructing Meaning - listener assigns meaning to the message
3. Responding- listener lets speaker know message is received and understood
3 Reasons to Listen
1. Learn and comprehend- involves searching for facts, ideas, and information
a. Public presentations
b. When new information is presented
2. Evaluate and critique - focuses on critical analysis
a. Critiques speakers fact's opinions and ideas
b. Might be affected by bias
3. Emphasize and understand- entails concentrating on the speakers feelings and attitudes
a. Not trying to listen for your own purpose
Challenges to good listening
Physical Barriers- interferences from the physical environment
Psychological Barriers- includes mental and emotional distractions
Message overload- too much to listen to
Message complexity- how detailed or complex the messages are
Communication Climate- the tone, general mood, or feeling that colors any interpersonal
relationship
Interaction Barriers- arise from engaging in verbal battles and using inflammatory language
Listening With Patience
Observe- perceive what is happening next
React- letting the emotional brain react positively or negatively
Judge- rational brain makes a judgement
Intervene- taking action
Listening Orientation
1. People Oriented- Who ex. The waitress at the table in identity thief
a. She showed physical contact, nodded, showed sympathy
2. Content Orientated- What, more interested in the content then who is saying it
a. Nothing personal, nodding head
3. Action Orientated- How
4. Time orientated- When

Reciprocal Listening- direct response by the listener
Background listening- scanning and skimming
