WGS 325 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Feminist Epistemology, Standpoint Theory, Knowledge
Document Summary
Epistemology: a theory of knowledge way of thinking. How do we come to know what we know. Conscious and unconscious ways: challenge the neutral researcher. Standpoint originally conceived of as a challenge to the unbiased" researcher argue one"s social construction influences the conceptual frameworks, analysis, concerns, knowledge produced and research itself. Argue all knowledge is socially situated and because of this we should have different understandings/ knowledge. The knowledge somehow comes to us and is self-evident: feminist epistemology. Thinks that process of analysis is key: framing: epistemology of the other. Problems are on what basis do we say this. Also acknowledging that they are different: idea that men and women are opposites everything the other is not. Idea is that if we think of women"s experiences as being marginalized, if we map the margins (start at the margins) we capture a broader frame: different sort of experience, capturing the norm silences the other.
