Written language seems to originate spontaneously around 5,000 years ago in 3 separate areas: egypt, mesopotamia and china, these areas have one thing in common, a river: nile (egypt), tigris & euphrates (mesopotamia), Yangtze (china: with water, a revolution in human society can be exploited: agriculture. Human society originally a society of hunters and gatherers. For much of human existence, food-getting was our preoccupation. However with the implementation of farming, humans could focus on other things. You need a steady water supply to grow crops, therefore, areas with rivers thrived. As population grew, a kind of residence pattern was able to develop. A society based on agriculture and animal raising is able to develop urban enclaves. Jericho on west bank of israel- settlement about 8,000 years ago, clearly a discernable town. In these areas abovementioned, a complex society with cities could develop.
