Soldiers became experimental agriculturalists, the war department in 1818 - army plant crops and raise livestock to save money on providing food. Innovations - testing genotypes of the same crop: fort wallace - constructed a windmill and pump irrigation system, deep-water drilling in west texas. Taking care of kids: bare-footed kids, fear of the herd bull, henry died of cancer, social and economic, 8 years of drought. Killed the garden: had to sell corns, hogs, cattles to pay mortgage and to pay for children"s education, bought new farmland but no kids wanted to farm, low wheat prices, herding cattle. The development of the isa farm over time: crops. Started with about 10 acres in row crops. 5 acres corn planted in sod with hatchet. Sold 150 bushels of wheat (40 bushels per acre) Planted some winter wheat for the first time. Sold wheat to improve on machineries for crops. Drought reduced wheat yields and destroyed corn crop for grain yield.
