PSYC 450 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Dystonia, Prodrug, Tricyclic Antidepressant
Document Summary
Seven important neurotransmitters: dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, acetylcholine, gaba, glutamine, endorphins. Dopamine: normal function: used in brain circuits that produces sensations of pleasure and reward. Used by cns neurons in voluntary movement: problems with imbalance. Schizophrenia, parkinson"s disease: substances that affect. Blocks dopamine receptors and leaves it in the cell. Cocaine users are fidgety and unable to be still. When the body"s natural opiates are activated dopamine receptors are. Serotonin transporters are responsible for removing serotonin after blocked: heroin, ecstasy they have done their job. Ecstasy is more readily taken up than serotonin itself. The transporter gets confused when ecstasy is in it. Serotonin gives put back in the synapse. Ecstasy has slightly addictive pathways: methamphetamine. Meth mimics dopamine and is transported into the cell. Meth forces the dopamine out of the cell. Transporters put dopamine in synapse and it gets stuck. It becomes stuck and becomes over stimulated: lsd.
