Human language an open and symbolic (no real connection between the words we use and what it represents) communication system that has rules of grammar, allows its users to express abstract ideas: dynamic will shift. Words come in and out of popular use, slang changes: represent intangibles -things that aren"t physi(cid:272)ally present, identify (cid:272)on(cid:272)epts (li(cid:271)erty, justice, freedom, love, how human language differs from communication systems of animals, use isn"t as complex. Morphemes smallest unit of language with meaning: combos of different phonemes, words (run, wed) smallest unit, prefixes (un-, pre) - signal something to us, suffixes (-ing, -ed) change meaning of a word. Words combos of morphemes: phrases, sentences, running, unwed, (cid:862)the dog is running(cid:863, syntax determines how words are combined to make sentences. Semantics rules that govern how we interpret that sentence: (cid:862)the dog is running around the house(cid:863, rules are ambiguous, a particular sentence can be interpreted in many different ways.
