Document Summary

The three basic types of political participation are: conventional, unconventional, and illegal. Conventional participation consists of voting, volunteering, campaign donating, running for office and joining groups. The unconventional participation includes sit-ins, demonstrations, protests and boycotts. Then illegal participation involves assassinations, terrorism, and sabotage. Participation overall is uncommon, however, voting is the most common form of political participation. Participants in politics are not representative of the population at all. There is a large gap between those that do vote/participate and those that do not get involved. Those that participate in politics may do so in different ways, such as: voting, wearing a pin or having a bumper sticker, donating to campaigns, belonging to an organization, running for office, are show to be active in parties. A person may choose to vote rationally if the individual believes that the benefits they will receive from voting is greater than the cost that it"s going to take.
