Described the world (~450 b. c. ) as the mediterranean sea surrounded by europe, asia, and libya; so much known because of phoenician trade routes: the library at alexandria. Intellectual focus, cultural crossroads, international hub for trade (~330 b. c. ) Syene observed the sun illuminated bottom of vertical well; used observations to determine the world is not flat; determined circumference was approx.
