HLTH 410 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Health Belief Model, Susan Ward
Document Summary
Module 6 lecture: theory-based approaches - dr. susan ward. Without broad understanding of all potential influences and solutions, some parts of the elephant might be overlooked. Theories provide a framework through which we can accurately assess large, complex health issues and their potential solutions. They remind us to look for common relationships between factors and help us ask the right questions. = an idea that has been studied through research and determined to be true in at least one circumstance. Because human behavior is complex, behavioral theories generally contain several concepts and/or constructs that work together to explain a behavior. = a theoretical concept that was created for a specific theory. As a theory is studied, relationships between concepts are clarified and put together to explain why a behavior occurs. Individual"s perception of the severity of a behavioral consequence plus the perception of their personal susceptibility to the consequence will determine their perception of threat from the behavior.
