Can be challenging to accurately assess preferences among potential participants. Opportunity for employees to outwit the program. Potential for being (or appearing to be) unfair to those who cannot/ do not participate in program, or to those who fail to achieve benchmark goals. Potential for being (or construed as) coercive. Employers have an ethical responsibility - in some cases, a legal responsibility - to avoid occurence of these unintended artifacts! Incentive use can positively impact behavior change. Incentive programs - when designed with care- can be easy, flexible and cost-effective. There are many different types of incentives.
