Manifest destiny- widely held belief in 19th century that america had special virtues; America destined to recreate the world in own image with direction from god. Oregon under joint occupation between us and gb: uk wants boundary at 49th parallel, us wants boundary at 54-40. Us wants to annex texas now that gb has taken interest. The joint resolution 1845-6: texas admitted as state, texas retains public lands, texas retains public debts, option to subdivide into as many as 4 states. Joint resolution approved by senate and by house, then approved by texan officials and ratified by voters. Convention of 1845 in texas to approve annexation: richard bache only vote against. Did not want to be in same country as ex wife. Annexation official december 29, 1845: ceremony february 19, 1846.
