Washington arrested and charged for attack of 53 year old white woman. Confessed to rape and murder of woman during interviewing. White mob seized him and set him on fire in front of 10,000 spectators. Lynching violates texas law but no one in the mob was arrested. National association for the advancement of colored people launched full investigation and tried to obtain federal anti-lynching bill: world war i intervenes and delays campaign, separate but equal. Did not violate 13th and 14th amendments as long as facilities were deemed equal. Segregation dates back to colonization of texas; separated mexicans, blacks, and whites: became social custom. After civil war, separation used as tool for control and encouraged violence. Black and mexican schools faced bad conditions: 1 room buildings and poor facilities, teachers paid less, inadequate financing. Sports events, restaurants, hotels: gerrymandering of districts. Neighborhoods drawn to either include or exclude black or mexican neighborhoods: poll tax.
