Attempts to gain immediate annexation to the united states. Texas voted 97% in favor of annexation to the us in 1836: because they knew it would be better for them economically. Texas was not annexed to the us because texas was a slavery state and neither presidential candidate wanted to talk about it (both parties kept quiet) Slavery was an exceptionally divisive issue in the nation as a whole. Other states saw texas as wedded to slavery. Slavery was needed in texas for economic gain. Since texas was rejected by the united states, texas was forced to continue on as an independent nation. Sam houston was elected president: worked to stabilize the nation, set up system of economic growth, worked to pay off debt. Worst economic disparity of the known time. Sharp downturn: price of cotton collapsed, as the price of cotton collapsed so too did the price of everything else.
