He sought to define freedom as something that was individualist and personal. He says the individual determines his freedom, not the collectiv e. Actually saying it kind of sucks to be born in the usa. It is about a guy and his friend going to vietnam and when he comes back, his job is gone and his friend is dead. Question of hope, but the song is not a question of hope. Springsteen leaned left and reagan was not a fan of his music. Reagan was such a charismatic guy that if he says it was about hope, then it was about hope in the papers. Reagan told them everything they wanted to hear. He was a monumental political figure at the time. Reagan is the second most influential president od the 20th century. His mother was religious and loving his father was abusive and an alcoholic.
