Slavery simply had no future in the states led by republican party. Most northerners are shocked with southern states action. It made southern slaveholders very anxious: southern and northern anxieties. Southern slaveholders felt that republican government cannot lead the massive uprising of the slaves. Slave holders also feared the republicans" government may undermine their influence on non slave holding whites. Northern businessman couldn"t just sit back and watch the states going out of the union. Many businessmen called for compromise at any price.
