COMM 305 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Kathryn Schulz, Infor, Expectancy Violations Theory
Document Summary
Explains people"s behavior when their expectations are breached. Basically we have certain expectations of how we use space. Meaning people attribute to the violations or infringement of their personal space. Playing mind games, making you feel guilty for something that you didn"t do, etc. Other people can get into your psychological space, but you have to ask yourself is it healthy? . When you"re dating someone and they are really clingy (always asking where you are, who you"re with, etc. ) Either going to emotionally distance yourself from them or you"ll start doing the same thing to them. Humans need personal space and closeness to others. Expectancy -- what you think will happen in a given situation. Violation valence -- how you evaluate the unexpected behavior. If you find someone to be attractive, you don"t find it as offensive when they break your expectations. Persuasion may be understood as self-induced intrapersonal event. Basically to understand how or why people are persuaded.
