Modeling: shading; a gradual transition from lights to darks. Foreshortening: carefully calculated angle of the virgin"s elbow makes it seem to project out toward the viewer. Axis: horizontal and vertical; line of demarcation in the landscape"s terrain that can be used to separate lighter hues from the darker. Iconography: conventional meaning or symbolic content associated with a particular form, object, or figure.
