ANTH 225 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Ring-Tailed Lemur, Dwarf Lemur, Indri
Document Summary
Order: primates (occupy some of the same niches that the earliest mammals do) Four groups of primates: prosimians: lemurs, lorises, tarsiers, means before apes , most primitive primates, new world monkeys, old world monkeys, apes and humans. Two ways to classify suborders (systematics): know both: prosimii and anthropoidea, prosimians: lemurs, tarsiers and lorises, anthropoids: monkeys, apes, humans. Cladistic classification: difference is the placement of the tarsiers. Sleeping nests: build nests for protection from predators, some species build different sleeping nests every night and some go back to the same nests for a period of time, who sleeps in the nests defines social structure. All babies are born with the clinging ability. Social: adaptations based on belonging to a social group and structure: to maintain integrity = pattern of appropriate behavior, group cohesion must be maintained. Grooming claw: way of bonding and social cohesion. Occupy many of the same niches as first primates.
