The study of all the nonverbal vocal sounds, including the silent pauses in speech, with which all humans interact. Ex: tone of voice, pitch, gestures, facial expressions: accents. Di erences in pronunciation characteristic of a group. Can reveal a person"s place of origin, education, & in some cultures, social class: other communication types. Grunts, laughs, giggles, moans, sighs: youtube video: my fair lady pronunciation. White-tailed deer, dogs, horses: body movement. And why do honeybees do it: odor. Ants release chemicals when they die so its fellows know to carry it away to the compost heap: how di erent are these forms of communication from human language. Symbolic language: an arbitrary (not obviously meaningful) gesture, call, word, or sentence that has meaning even when its referent is not present, ex: ower, mucus, thought to di erentiate human language from nonhuman language. However, research shows some animals might have symbolic communication: ex: vervet monkeys.
