Often assessed by impact factor and difficulty getting published there, broadness of the journal. Editors and reviewers: editor action editors reviewers. Reviewers evaluate the paper, make recommendations to the action editors. Evaluate based on quality of science and validity o f conclusions, the novelty and importance of the work, relevance to the journal. May not be an expert in all aspects. Might overlook a problem because they are too busy. Editors may have bias for/against a research topic, bias for friends, might not think the work is flashy enough. Easy to give the benefit of the doubt to big names in the field. May downplay the mistakes and up-play the importance of the study. If they are rejected from one journal, they may resubmit to different journals until it gets accepted, hoping to get other reviewers that do not see the flaws. Blind review-- may still be able to guess whose work it is.
