Fundamental changes from freudian theory: freud focused on transference: applying old patterns of behavior/emotion to new relationships. Still considers influence of unconscious behaviors and childhood experiences. Karen horney (1885 - 1952) | well-educated psychologist in a male-dominated/sexist era. Basic anxiety: feeling of being isolated/helpless in a potentially hostile world. Neurotic needs: needs people feel but aren"t realistic/desirable: need to dominate (aggressive, attempt to take advantage of people) Find a life-long prince charming, to be loved by everyone, to dominate everyone: lessens insecurities, ways of defending against anxiety/insecurity. Can lead to self-defeating behavior, relationship problems. Personalities: moving toward people, the compliant personality | minimize anxiety though affection/acceptance from loved ones.
