Document Summary

John b. watson (1878 1958) create emotional reactions by associating things with stimuli. John watson should abandon study of the mind. 2 problems with introspection should focus on measurable behavior: extremely variable for individuals, results are difficult to verify invisible mental processes. Paired ringing of a bell with presentation of food. After enough pairings, the bell alone caused salivation classical conditioning. Argued that behavior can be analyzed without reference to the mind. Operant conditioning - shape behavior by rewards/punishments. Tolman (1938) trained rates to find food in a four-armed maze. 2 competing interactions behaviorism predicts that the rats learned to turn right to find food : tolman believed that the rats had created a cognitive map of the maze and were navigating to a specific arm. What happens when rats are placed in a different arm of the maze: rats navigated to specific arm where the food is located.
