PSC 392 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Sunni Islam, Sectarianism, Media Of Syria
Document Summary
One could say that whatever the reason for the iraqi invasion by the west might have been, it did not include the islamist character of the regime existing before 2003. On the other hand, we can argue that the invasion created the islamist movement, both. Shi"ite and sunni, because of the conditions it created. Iraq was not so simple a society as afghanistan. Same divisions have persisted since 1932 when iraq was given independence. After invasion, one major issue was controlling the oil fields. Federalism opposed by central iraq because they have no oil resources, but north and south that had oil resources so they encouraged federalism. Sectarianism is usually defensive, guard against each other to defend resources. Shiites rejected to be part of iraq under sunni domination when granted independence. Ottomans were sunnis and themselves encouraged sunnism, shi"ites were workers. Shi"ites tended towards communism, by 1932 created vast trade union due to conditions.
