Pie minus the aspiration is not a valid word in english. Voiceless bilabial stop in pat is not predictable. Bat and cat and fat are also legit words. There are really broad and really specific phonetic transcription. @ high lvl of abstraction, no need to write aspiration. Phonology = study in patterns & structures of sound. Set of sound contrasts to express meaning contrasts. Minimal pair = pair of words w/ diff. meanings but have only 1 sign change. Diff. btwn 2 sounds is contrastive if minimal pairs exist.
