You can always do something to make a sentence longer. Ex. , if x is the longest sentence, i don"t think that x. Each person has only heard a finite # of sentence. But infinite # of possible sentences we"ve never heard. Can"t be because we"ve never seen it before. Kids acq. lang. very fast @ very early age. Little-to-no negative evidence ( here"s a sentence; we don"t say that ) Data to which child is exposed isn"t perfect. Children figure out properties of their particular lang. Grammar = concise form of speaker"s tacit knowledge of native lang. Prescriptive = should say this, shouldn"t say that. Competence = what grammar would produce in perfect world . Performance = actual ling. behavior (interruptions, memory, fatigue, etc )
