Document Summary

Ip is a hop-to-hop protocol: source host doesn"t know which specific routers will handle end to end transmission. It only knows the first-hop router: after that, routers dynamically select the best. Next-hop router based on routing protocol metrics: summarize the functions of the five layers of the hybrid network model and describe the major tcp/ip protocols used at layers 3, 4 and 5. Data is processed according to an application protocol. Decides which application protocol should be used to process data on the receiving computer. Each application protocol is assigned a unique numerical identifier called a port (software port). The transport layer puts the port number in the header. When the data arrives at the destination computer, the transport layer there examines the number to determine the application protocol the data should be sent to. Receives data segments from layer 4 and add a header to create a packet. Header contains: destination, and source ip address.
