HTW 121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Homeostasis, Catecholamine, Hans Selye
Document Summary
Hans selye - the father of stress research . Stress: the nonspecific response of the human organism to any demand placed upon it . Alarm: body initially responds to stressor w/ changes that lower resistance. Resistance: if stressor continues, body mobilizes to withstand the stress and return to normal. Homeostasis: body systems maintain a stable and consistent (balanced) state. Exhaustion: ongoing extreme stressors eventually deplete the body"s resources so we function at less than normal. Illness and death: body"s resources are not replenished and/or additional stressors occur; the body suffers breakdowns. Depression - leading cause of disability in u. s. Self-efficacy: belief in self to achieve goals. Method of reducing muscle tension by contracting then relaxing certain areas of the body. Relaxing muscles can quiet the mind and restore internal balance. Approach to stress control, self-healing, or motivating life changes by means of guided or directed imagery. Requires practice and in some cases, instruction by qualified health professionals.
